Unit 1: The Global Heritage of the American People Prior to 1500
You are about to teach 7th grade Social Studies in NYS and have started to look at the curriculum map to start planning for the year. You have probably skimmed the amount of content that you are required to teach your wonderful new students. At this point, if you are anything like me, you are already overwhelmed, nervous and confused. Don’t worry, I’ve been there and I will help to get you through this.
Unit 1: The Global Heritage of the American People Prior to 1500 is broken up into 4 sections. Let me be clear, this in no way insinuates that there will only be 4 lessons in this unit. The four sections that are included in this Unit are:
History and the Social Sciences: The Study of People
Geographic Factors Influence Culture
Iroquoian and Algonquian Cultures on the Atlantic Coast of North America
European Conceptions of the World in 1500

The NYS Social Studies core curriculum is a guide for NYS social studies teachers that the New York State Board of Education demands are taught. The New York State Core Curriculum includes every grade level from k-12. It contains a nice spiral curriculum, adding knowledge to knowledge. With each piece of content is the theme, related standards and connections that can be made. How to Teach Progressive Era Trusts with Differentiated Instruction
Trusts are something that multiple companies or industries created and gave power over to a council to reduce competition and increase profits. During the Progressive Era trusts became a big political issue because of the corruption that was associated with the trusts. The federal government had to intervene and created a series of laws meant to help fix the situation. These are listed at a later section of this article with the content that is included in this Progressive Era: Trusts Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan.
Teachers can differentiate instruction during their Progressive Era Trusts mini-lessons while they reinforce the content. I recommend presenting the content “traditionally” first. In other words, use the Logical and Linguistic Multiple Intelligences through the means of lecture. Then reintroduce it by using the other Multiple Intelligences like the Musical Multiple Intelligence, Spatial Multiple Intelligence, Interpersonal Multiple Intelligence, Intrapersonal Multiple Intelligence, and Kinesthetic Multiple Intelligence. Not only can teachers use the Multiple Intelligence Theory to differentiate instruction but they can also use leveling or tiering. They can create two levels of their Progressive Era: Trusts mini-lesson. This is especially helpful for a co-teaching situation. The basic level should use simplified language and the enriched version should increase the level of vocabulary used as well as an increase in critical thinking exercises. Create two different note sheets for this type of mini-lesson that will help challenge both ability levels of students.

The Silk Road Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan
There are many places on the web to locate a Silk Road differentiated instruction lesson plan. The question should be where can I find a quality Silk Road differentiated instruction lesson plan. Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan on Why the US Entered WWI
The US entered WWI for a number of reasons including unrestricted submarine warfare, the Zimmerman Telegram, and the 1st Russian Revolution. When teaching a lesson on why the US entered WWI teachers need to differentiate instruction.
Teachers can teach vocabulary before the lesson and differentiate instruction by having students draw a picture to bring in the spatial learning style or create a mnemonic that would bring in the linguistic learning style.
During the mini-lesson teachers can differentiate instruction by bringing in pictures and media. This allows students with the spatial learning style to feel more connected to the material. Another way to differentiate instruction for a mini-lesson is to create two different versions of a PowerPoint. Create one version that focuses on the standards that students are required to learn and create the other as an enriched version. This differentiated instruction strategy is easily done if their is a co-teacher in the room.
In order to differentiate instruction in the work sessions, a teacher can offer choices to students that are based on different multiple intelligence learning styles. They can offer these multiple intelligence learning style activities: persuasive speech, talk show skit, propaganda poster. The persuasive speech brings in the following multiple intelligence learning styles: linguistic learning style, logical learning style, interpersonal learning style or intrapersonal learning style. The talk show brings in these following multiple intelligence learning styles: interpersonal learning style, linguistic learning style and kinesthetic learning style. The last option is the propaganda poster activity which bring in the linguistic learning style, intrapersonal learning style or interpersonal learning style, and the spatial learning style. You may have noticed that some of the prior noted activities have both intrapersonal and interpersonal learning styles attached. That is because they may be able to be done individually, in a partnership or in a group. Allowing a student to not only choose their activity but also choose how they do an activity will help them feel more ownership in their education. If the teacher offers all three of these options they will have successfully differentiated instruction using multiple intelligence learning styles.
