Multiple intelligence learning styles work together during activities. When students create poetry they use the following multiple intelligence learning styles:
- Intrapersonal multiple intelligence learning style
- Interpersonal multiple intelligence learning style
- Linguistic multiple intelligence learning style
- Sometimes Musical multiple intelligence learning style
Poetry uses the linguistic multiple intelligence learning style because one needs to work with language. Poems that have rhythm when read are also using the musical multiple intelligence learning style. There are many types of poems that can be used to work with content as a classroom activity. I’ve noticed that rhyming poems are easier for students to remember and thus remember the content.
Second language learners seem to have a harder time writing rhyming poems probably due to a limited amount of vocabulary. I have given ELL students as well as certain SPED students rhyming dictionaries as an accommodation for a poetry classroom activity, which did seem to help some. Additional guidance by me, the teacher, was still necessary though.
Teachers can allow students to have a choice between working by themselves (intrapersonal multiple intelligence learning style) and working with a partner (interpersonal multiple intelligence learning style). I do not recommend creating poetry as a group activity. I have noticed that a lot of relaxation occurs by many in a group while one or two create the poem, even when student roles are given.
Teachers can differentiate instruction by offering students more choices of classroom activities that use different multiple intelligence learning styles but focus on the same content.
