Expanding the Nation’s Boundaries Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan

This social studies differentiated instruction lesson plan includes:

  • Lesson Plan
  • There are three different ability levels of vocabulary sheets. The enriched version allows for more critical thinking by making the students write the definition in their own words. The average version has students filling in the blanks of the definitions. The basic version has the complete definition to allow them to read the definition and then work on step two, which is on all of the versions; write a sentence or draw a picture to show understanding of the vocabulary word.

  • There are 2 different note sheets for the enriched level version of the notes. There are two different note sheets for the basic leveled version of notes. The enriched note sheet can be used for both versions. The different ability leveled note sheets allow some to do more critical thinking and others to focus on the content and then review with a partner after each slide is presented. This provides repetition for students who need it and enrichment for others.
Basic Level Note Sheets

Basic Level Note Sheets

  • Student Choice Sheet to help teachers group appropriately

lesson student choice

  •  The activity is creating two billboard signs to represent the purchase of Louisiana and Florida. Teachers can choose to use mixed ability leveled paired grouping and use the enriched level version only or they can use similar ability leveled paired grouping and use both the enriched and basic leveled versions. Teachers can also allow students to choose, the day before, whether they would like to work by themselves or with a partner. This gives the teacher enough time to group appropriately. A student choice sheet has been provided for this. The basic level includes ideas of logos for both purchases. Providing both logos reduces the amount of critical thinking for them and allows them to focus on the repetition of the content while still allowing them to be creative with the drawing and designing where the logo and picture should go on the billboard. The enriched version assumes the student can critically think at a higher level to create their own logos.

  • There is a homework assignment that focuses on expository writing with a grading checklist. It is part of my leveled writing system.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kasha-Mastrodomenico specializes in middle school social studies differentiated instruction. One of the newer social studies differentiated instruction lesson plans that are now on the site is the “Background Causes of the American Revolution“. It includes the following sections:

  • Lesson Plan with notes
  • 3 Ability Levels of Vocabulary Sheets
  • 2 Ability Levels of Note Sheets for Enriched PowerPoint
  • 2 Ability Levels of Note Sheets for Basic PowerPoint
  • 2 Ability Levels DBQ Activity with Answer Sheets
  • 2 Ability Levels of a Graphic Organizer
  • 2 Ability Levels of Homework Essential Questions

Background Causes of the American Revolution Lesson Vocabulary

The anticipatory set is a vocabulary work sheet that is based on the Multiple Intelligence Theory and uses ability levels to differentiate instruction. There are three sections: vocabulary word, definition, and allows student choice between a drawing or a sentence that shows understanding. There are three ability levels of these sheets to challenge students on their own ability level. The basic level includes the vocabulary word and definitions so that they can read it and then use it in the third box with either a drawing or a sentence. The average ability level includes the vocabulary word and slotted definitions in which they fill from the PowerPoint. The slots highlight the most important part of the definition. They then will need to draw or write a sentence in the third box. The enriched version allows room for more critical thinking by having the students write the definition in their own words and then work on the third box for drawing or a sentence. Below is an example of the three ability levels vocabulary sheet.

Differentiated instruction continues with the note section of the “Background Causes of the American Revolutionsocial studies differentiated instruction lesson plan. There are two ability levels of a PowerPoint that contains the same content. The basic level has been simplified to allow students the opportunity to finish their notes and have time to review with a partner or on their own. The basic note sheet uses slotted notes that they can fill in as they go through the PowerPoint. The enriched version goes into more detail and allows the students to use their critical thinking skills to write their notes in their own words. Below is an example of the basic note sheet that goes with the PowerPoint.

Background Causes of the American Revolution Lesson Graphic Organizers

For the Concluding Set, the Background Causes of the American Revolution lesson offers a differentiated instruction graphic organizer that is available in two different ability levels. The basic ability level has the content but not the titles in the boxes and also includes a word box. The enriched version allows students to use more critical thinking skills by filling in the content box around the titles. Below is the graphic organizer. It focuses on both the economic causes and the political causes of the American Revolution.

What are resources to help differentiate instruction for NYS social studies?

NYS social studies can be a difficult subject to teach with the immense amount of material that needs to be covered each year. There are a lot of places on the web that provide resources for NYS social studies teachers. Two of them are provided below:

I bet most NYS social studies teachers don’t realize that they can email their NYS board of education and actually get a reply from them. I taught social studies in NY for 5 years and I didn’t know that I could do this until recently. It would have saved me a lot of time during my planning. Using them as a resource can help you become a more effective NYS social studies teacher. You can find the email by going to http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/aboutus.html and look under social studies.

Another great resource for NYS social studies is http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kasha-Mastrodomenico. It follows the NYS core curriculum and standards. It offers differentiated instruction resources for NYS social studies. It contains the following resources:

What is so challenging about the NYS 7th and 8th grade social studies core curriculum?

Meeting the immense amount of material in the 7th and 8th grade NYS social studies core curriculum is definitely a challenge, even though the History of America and NYS is divided between the 2 years.

Another one of the challenges is that it is vague. If a teacher tries to follow the NYS 7th and 8th grade core curriculum as it is written, much research needs to be done to put it all together in the correct way. This can be very time consuming and for a new teacher, close to impossible.

If you need an example, compare the NYS 7th and 8th grade social studies core curriculum to the GA Framework. Here is a link to one section of the GA Framework: https://www.georgiastandards.org/Frameworks/GSO%20Frameworks/SS_Gr_8_Unit_3_11-16-09_PRchgs.pdf

and NYS 7th and 8th grade social studies core curriculum:

http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/socst/pub/sscore1.pdf

You can easily see which one is more realistically covered in one year. I believe that a good curriculum is somewhere between the two. I think that GA’s could be more challenging and include more of US History and I believe that the NYS 7th and 8th grade core curriculum can be decreased quite a bit and simplified.

Don’t worry though NYS teachers, there is help for you out there! http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kasha-Mastrodomenico is based on the NYS Social Studies core curriculum and it differentiates instruction for you. Check it out!

What is the NYS Social Studies Core Curriculum?

The NYS Social Studies core curriculum is a guide for NYS social studies teachers that the New York State Board of Education demands are taught. The New York State Core Curriculum includes every grade level from k-12. It contains a nice spiral curriculum, adding knowledge to knowledge. With each piece of content is the theme, related standards and connections that can be made. The following is the site to find the New York State Core Curriculum: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/socst/pub/sscore1.pdf

A good site that will help NYS  social studies teachers plan for differentiated instruction lesson plans is my site http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kasha-Mastrodomenico. I base my lessons and PowerPoints off of the NYS  social studies standards and core curriculum. Check it out!
