Geographic Factors Influenced European Exploration and Settlement Lesson Content

The NYS 7th grade social studies curriculum contains the Unit 2: European Exploration and Colonization of the Americas. The second section of that unit focuses on the Geographic Factors Influenced European Exploration and Settlement of North and South America. I have followed the curriculum and have produced a social studies differentiated instruction lesson plan on the Geographic Factors Influenced European Exploration and Settlement of the Americas. It contains the following content:

1. Effects of weather and natural hazards on the Atlantic crossings

2. Characteristics of different physical environments in the Americas and where different Europeans settled

3. The development of “New England,” “New France,” “New Netherland,” and “New Spain”

I put all of this content in a beautiful PowerPoint with a lot of visuals. The content is easy to understand. The notes can also be found in the lesson plan under the note section. Iroquois and Algonquian Cultures Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan

Iroquois and Algonquian Cultures Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan

Iroquois and Algonquian Cultures Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan

The NYS 7th grade social studies curriculum includes the Iroquois and the Algonquian cultures. What’s funny is that the Algonquian and the Iroquois are actually linguistic groups. The Iroquois that were included in the Iroquois Confederacy do have a similar culture but the Algonquian speakers in NYS were very different from one another. In the Iroquois and Algonquian Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan, I go into detail about the:

1. Settlement Patterns of both linguistic groups

2. Creation and Belief Systems

3. Importance of the Laws of Nature and the Wise use of Natural Resources (Iroquois and Algonquian)

4. Gender roles

5. Family, Kinship and Education

6. Language

Geographic Regions of NYS Lesson Plan

I’m working my way through the NYS 7th grade Social Studies standards and curriculum for my site, http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kasha-Mastrodomenico. This was a really fun lesson plan for me to make because I grew up in Rochester, NY and am familiar with every region in NY through various trips and moves.

The content that the Geographic Regions of NYS lesson plan  and PowerPoint cover is found below. The PowerPoint is filled with beautiful pictures that will bring each region to life for students. The essential questions and vocabulary will help student focus on the content.

  • Map of Geographic Regions of NYS
  • Map of Major Natural Waterways of NYS
  • Map of the Great Lakes
  • Flora of NYS
  • Fauna of NYS
  • Seasons and weather of NYS
  • Vocabulary

The Geographic Regions of NYS lesson plan includes:

  • 3 different levels of vocabulary sheets; basic, average and enriched. Each ability level allows students the choice between linguistic or spatial intelligence by offering them the choice of using the vocabulary word in a sentence or drawing a picture to show understanding.
  • Student note sheets that follow the PowerPoint mini-lesson
  • Within the notes are 3 different map activities focusing on The Great Lakes, Major Natural Waterways in NYS, and NYS Geographic Regions as well as the key for grading
