Abolition Movement Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan

The Abolition Movement differentiated instruction lesson plan is now on http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kasha-Mastrodomenico! This social studies differentiated instruction lesson plan uses different ability levels to help all students be challenged and enjoy the activities within the lesson plan. It is based off of the 7th grade NYS social studies curriculum and standards.

This social studies differentiated instruction lesson plan includes:

  • The first part is the lesson plan in which the mini-lesson notes with links, graphic, essential questions, vocabulary words are included and much more.
  • There are 3 ability levels of vocabulary sheets. The enriched version allows for more critical thinking by making the students write the definition in their own words. The average version has students filling in the blanks of the definitions. The basic version has the complete definition to allow them to read the definition and then work on step two, which is on all of the versions; write a sentence or draw a picture to show understanding of the vocabulary word.

  •  There is an enriched note sheet that works for both the basic PowerPoint and the enriched PowerPoint. It allows for more critical thinking because the students will write their notes in their own words focusing on the most important sections.
  • There 2 sets of basic note sheets for both the enriched and the basic PowerPoints. This type of note sheet helps student focus on the content by filling in slotted notes. It allows time to have students do a partner review after each slide for repetition of the content.

  • The activity choice sheet gives students the choice to work with a partner or by themselves on the brochure activity. This sheet helps teachers plan for the activity and pair appropriately.

  • There is a brochure activity with a rubric. It helps students designate roles for the activity. The directions are broken up and easy to follow. There is an example of how the brochure should look and provides the content that the students need to use. It even breaks down the time it should take for each part to keep students on track. This activity should be done in mixed ability pairs or individually.

  • There are 2 ability levels of a graphic organizer to review the content in the lesson plan. The enriched version assumes the students can either remember what was in the lesson or can quickly look it up in the notes. The basic version guides the students more with a phrase box. Both levels come with answer keys to help the teacher grade.
